Marcello Ristorante Sarasota | Wine Spot Wednesday

Marcello Ristorante Italiano in Sarasota, FL

We’ve found that some of the best wine lists and most memorable experiences aren’t hidden inside over-the-top dining rooms or bustling restaurants. Instead, they’re tucked inside places you’d drive past without a second glance.

That’s exactly what we found at Marcello Ristorante Italiano in south Sarasota, where one of the most impressive wine cellars we’ve seen in Southwest Florida sits behind an unassuming storefront. We’d heard about it for quite some time and finally had the chance to visit while hosting a friend from Atlanta.

What followed was an evening of remarkable wines, exceptional Italian food, and memories that transported us back to one of our favorite winery visits in Italy.

Quick Facts

  • Location: Sarasota, FL
  • Marcello Ristorante Website
  • Vibe: Casual, welcoming, and completely unpretentious. Professionally dressed waitstaff make Caesar salads table-side…while a huge picture of Mr T keeps watch. One wall of the restaurant showcases their cellar filled with remarkable wines. Somehow, it works perfectly.
  • Food: Chef Marcello owns the restaurant and creates a nightly menu featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients and homemade pastas. Every dish we tried was thoughtfully prepared, and another guest even stopped by our table to tell us he orders the veal every single visit because it’s that good. After our meal, we understood exactly why.

Why Visit

  • The wine list. If you love Italian wine, this is reason enough to visit. The wine list is extensive, thoughtfully curated, and spans Italy’s celebrated wine regions – from familiar favorites to bottles even seasoned wine lovers may not have encountered.
  • The cuisine. Homemade pappardelle, fresh Gulf shrimp, an expertly prepared pork chop, and classic Italian desserts made every course feel worthy of the wines accompanying them. Since the menu changes nightly, we cannot wait to see what’s on the menu the next time.
  • The service. Our server, Gus, has been with Marcello Ristorante for fourteen years, and it showed. His knowledge, timing, and recommendations elevated the entire evening without ever feeling formal or rushed.

Our Experience at Marcello Ristorante Italiano

We called about a week ahead for reservations. With only nine tables, seating is limited, so while we got a table, we would recommend calling early – especially during season.

From the moment we stepped inside, we knew this wasn’t going to be an ordinary dinner. Wine boxes lined the walls, and just beyond them sat an impressive cellar filled with bottles from Italy’s most celebrated wine regions, alongside outstanding selections from around the world.

Then came the wine list.

Calling it a “list” hardly seems fair – it was an entire book. Before we’d even finished dinner, my Partner in Wine was already planning our next visit—and the bottles we wanted to try next. He appreciated its depth in regions, varietals, and vintages. It’s not something that we’ve found many places in the area.

Since we were enjoying Italian cuisine, we naturally focused on Italian wines. After carefully exploring the selections, my Partner in Wine chose a 2018 Terre Nere Brunello di Montalcino.

The bottle immediately brought back memories of our visit to Terre Nere in Montalcino, Italy, last year. Meeting Federico (the owner’s son), hearing the story of the winery, and tasting wines surrounded by the vineyards made the experience unforgettable. Seeing that bottle on the wine list instantly brought us back to our Italy trip. It’s one of the things we love most about wine – how a familiar bottle can transport you back to a place, a conversation, or a moment in time.

Memories from Terre Nere

The Brunello opened with notes of dark cherry, earth, and subtle spice. Although it was decanted tableside, the wine continued opening beautifully throughout dinner, becoming softer and more expressive with every pour. By the final glass, we found ourselves reminiscing not only about the wine itself, but about the people and the place that first introduced us to it.

We paired the Brunello with a tableside Caesar salad and grilled octopus – an elegant beginning to the evening.

To enjoy with our entrées, my Partner in Wine selected a 2019 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore, another producer that has never disappointed us.

Rich, beautifully balanced, and layered with dark fruit, leather, baking spices, and silky tannins, it paired wonderfully with our meal. Naturally, my Partner in Wine ordered the pork chop, while our friend and I both chose homemade pappardelle with a white wine sauce and fresh Gulf shrimp.

The wines, the food, and the company came together to create one of those evenings you’ll remember long after the last glass has been poured.

I passed on dessert, but my Partner in Wine declared the cannoli one of the best he’s had, while our friend couldn’t stop talking about the tiramisu.

🍷 Our Final Pour Wrap Up

Marcello Ristorante is absolutely worth the short drive into Sarasota.

The wine cellar alone makes it a destination for wine lovers, but it’s the combination of exceptional wines, thoughtful cuisine, genuine hospitality, and the memories created around the table that make it truly memorable.

The best wine spots aren’t always the most obvious. Sometimes they’re the places where a familiar bottle brings back memories of distant vineyards, conversations linger long after dinner, and good friends make every pour taste just a little better.

🥂 Salute to Marcello’s – and to another evening that reminded us why we love discovering great wine (and great wine spots). Sometimes it’s the bottle that stays with you. Other times, it’s the people you shared it with. The very best experiences leave you remembering both.
