One of the best parts of the Southwest Florida summer is the quiet transition into the off-season. It’s the perfect time to take advantage of the open roads and make the easy jaunt a bit further inland to Downtown Wellen Park.
For this week’s Wine Spot Wednesday, we did exactly that, slipping away for an early evening visit to Banyan House.
Downtown Wellen Park was beautifully serene when we arrived around 5:45 PM the other night. We easily found parking right in front of the restaurant, and while we had a reservation, the summer quiet meant we could bypass the dining room and head straight for the bar (still capturing our OpenTable points, though!). There were plenty of seats to be had at the beautiful bar, offering the perfect relaxed vantage point for an impromptu date night.

Why Visit
- Happy Hour! If you time your visit right, the Happy Hour specials are an absolute treat. The cask wine options offer a crisp, accessible Sauvignon Blanc, and the elevated small plates – like the whipped feta shareable plate – provide a high-end experience at an approachable weeknight value.
- While the by-the-glass selection is nice, the bottle list is where the real intrigue lies. It is a compact but smartly curated selection. We spotted a few bottles that we would have loved to linger over had time permitted – making it an excellent spot for a long, celebratory dinner with friends.
- Downtown Wellen Park is incredibly charming during these quieter months. We highly recommend planning your evening to begin with a little boutique shopping, followed by a relaxed dinner at Banyan House, and wrapping up with a sunset stroll around the lake.
Our Venice Wine Spot Wednesday Experience at Banyan House
We had an incredibly enjoyable evening, even with a bit of real-world craziness happening in the background (yes – we have life-chaos just like everyone else!). A few urgent personal calls had us stepping away from the bar throughout the night, but the bartender couldn’t have been more graceful or attentive. That warm, neighborly hospitality immediately made us feel right at home.
To kick off the night, we dove into the Happy Hour menu. The cask Sauvignon Blanc was a delightful surprise—bright, clean, and the ultimate refreshing weeknight sipper for a warm Florida evening. We paired it with the whipped feta small plate ($10), which was the perfect creamy, savory starter.
For the main course:
- My Partner in Wine went straight for the pork chop (of course!). He loves evaluating local iterations of this classic, and he reported that this one was incredibly solid – juicy, well-seared, and a top contender for the area.
- I opted for a lighter combination: the vibrant beet salad paired with their famous papes bravas (although I am not sure the full plate of papes bravas counts as “lighter”).
So let’s talk about those potatoes. Banyan House puts their own spin on the classic Spanish patatas bravas, and they are spectacular. They were the ultimate combination of crispy, warm, and perfectly salty. Honestly, I would drive back to Wellen Park just to enjoy those again.

And while we didn’t dive into the heavy hitters on the wine list during this trip, my eyes immediately locked onto a Malbec from Luján de Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina. Having traveled through Mendoza earlier this year, and stayed in Luján de Cuyo, I know just how bold and velvety those reds can be. That wine is already at the top of my list for our next visit.

Banyan House is a fantastic addition to the local dining scene. Between the bright, welcoming atmosphere, the solid wine list, and those irresistible crispy potatoes, it perfectly embodies the coastal life we love about Southwest Florida.
